Steven J. Hyde appreciates the absence of constraints in art, reflecting his unconventional lifestyle, punk attitude, and complex personality. His comfort with vulnerability influences his creativity, enabling him to produce distinctive art pieces. His inspiration manifests in various forms, drawn from his life experiences and the emotions he encounters. He is captivated by the Human Condition, exploring the diverse emotions and behaviours that shape human existence.
He finds beauty in the natural decay of both organic and manufactured materials, which evolve into visually striking forms over time. The changing light throughout the day and into the night profoundly influences and inspires him, as he strives to incorporate authentic textures into his artwork.

His creative process is fluid and marked by a willingness to experiment with multiple layers of different types of paint, such as oil, acrylic, and various pigments. He utilizes lacquers, solvents, fillers, and sealants to create depth and achieve vibrant colour combinations. Committed to his craft, he paints in his studio every day of the week, typically dedicating time to both morning and evening sessions. Due to his layering methods, the drying and completion of his pieces can extend over several weeks. In his artistic practice, he often incorporates reclaimed industrial paints obtained from local council depots whenever feasible.
Having grown up in a heavily industrialized mining town in Staffordshire, England, during the 1970s, he was surrounded by agricultural land, extensive forests, a canal, and a river. This juxtaposition of industrial development and nature left a lasting impression on his psyche. He was particularly struck by the stark, brutalist factories and power stations set against the picturesque backdrop of the natural world.
